Australia will play host to the Oceania Cup 2025

"VAN" (Sports Desk - 02.09.2025) :: Starting from 4 September, Darwin, Australia will play host to the Oceania Cup 2025 - Oceania’s premier hockey tournament running from 4-7 September - with the champions punching their ticket to the FIH Hockey World Cup Belgium & Netherlands 2026.

Both the men’s and women’s tournament will be played between Australia and New Zealand in three-match series’ each. Three points will be awarded for a win and teams will split one point each in case of a draw. At the end of the series, the team with the most points will win the Oceania Cup.

The winner of each competition will qualify for the FIH Hockey World Cup Belgium and Netherlands 2026.

In the women’s competition the winner of the competition will secure World Cup qualification, while the second placed team will head to the FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers.

In the men’s competition however, Australia have already qualified for the upcoming World Cup via the FIH Hockey Pro League 2023-24. In the case of Australia winning the men’s Oceania Cup, New Zealand will qualify for the World Cup as the second placed team from the continent.

The three matches in both competitions will be played on 4, 6 and 7 September. The women’s matches will be played first on all three days, followed by the men’s matches.

Six teams have already qualified for the women’s competition at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026. Belgium and Netherlands, on account of being hosts of the event, gained direct qualification. Germany and Argentina qualified through the previous two editions of the FIH Hockey Pro League. USA secured qualification through the Pan American Cup and Spain qualified from the Eurohockey Championship. Along with Oceania, continental championships in Africa and Asia will determine three direct qualifiers for the event, with the remaining seven teams qualifying through the FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers in 2026.

Based on their performance at the Pan American Cup and the EuroHockey Championships, the following women’s teams have qualified for the FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers 2026: Uruguay, Chile, Canada, Ireland, England, France, Italy, Wales, Scotland, Austria and Switzerland, with with four further sides qualifying from the upcoming Asia Cup and one from the Oceania Cup.

Six teams have also qualified for the men’s competition at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026. Belgium and Netherlands, on account of being hosts of the event, gained direct qualification.
