"VAN" (Sports Desk - 24.08.2026) :: Morocco wrote a new historic chapter in African beach volleyball after winning the men’s gold medal at the African Beach Volleyball Championship, defeating Algeria 2-0 in the final to claim the continental title and secure qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The Moroccan triumph was more than just a title victory. It capped an exceptional campaign in which Morocco reached both the men’s and women’s finals, becoming the only country among the 44 teams competing in the championship to reach the finals in both categories.
The men’s final was played at Abu Heif Beach in Alexandria in front of a strong crowd and amid significant media interest, bringing to a close a championship that featured intense competition among Africa’s leading teams.
Morocco Claim the Gold
Morocco entered the final against Algeria with great focus, fully aware that the match involved more than the gold medal, with Olympic qualification also at stake.
The opening set was highly competitive, but Morocco managed to take control at the decisive moments and win 21-19.
In the second set, Morocco raised its level and imposed its authority, winning 21-12 to complete a 2-0 victory and claim the men’s African title and gold medal.
Gold Medal and a Ticket to Los Angeles
The significance of Morocco’s achievement increased further as the team secured qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, becoming the sole African representative in men’s beach volleyball at the Olympic Games.
Morocco therefore transformed its continental campaign into a remarkable double achievement: the African title and Olympic qualification, following an impressive run on the sands of Abu Heif Beach.
Historic Achievement: Morocco Reach Both Finals
Reaching both the men’s and women’s finals was one of the defining features of Morocco’s campaign, as the country established a strong presence in the decisive stages of the championship.
In the women’s competition, Morocco reached the final against Nigeria after an impressive campaign, before losing 2-0 and taking the silver medal.
Despite the women’s final defeat, combining the women’s silver with the men’s gold gave Morocco an exceptional presence in the championship and made it the standout nation in the final stages.
Nigeria Win the Women’s Title, Morocco Take Silver
Nigeria were crowned women’s champions after defeating Morocco 2-0 in the final.
Nigeria won the opening set 21-18, before maintaining their advantage to take the second set 21-11, securing the gold medal and the qualification ticket to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Morocco took the silver medal but left the championship with major achievements, most notably qualification for the World Championship, in addition to the historic feat of reaching both the men’s and women’s finals.
Bouchra Hajij: Moroccan Leadership Behind the Success
The Moroccan achievement has received widespread recognition, particularly for the role played by Bouchra Hajij, President of the Moroccan Volleyball Federation, President of the African Volleyball Confederation, and Vice President of the International and Arab Volleyball Federations, in supporting the development of the sport and advancing Moroccan beach volleyball.
Morocco’s qualification for both the men’s and women’s finals, followed by the men’s gold medal and qualification for Los Angeles 2028, reflects the fruits of continued efforts to build teams capable of competing for titles and establishing Morocco as a strong force on the African and international stages.
The achievement confirms that Moroccan volleyball, particularly beach volleyball, is steadily strengthening its position among the continent’s leading powers, with a clear vision focused on consistent participation and success at major international competitions.
