~ The Netherlands added more heat wins as Great Britain, the USA and debuting Greek and Irish women’s quadruple sculls crews also made their presence felt in Amsterdam
"VAN" (Sports Desk - 26.08.2026) :: Day 2 of the 2026 World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, saw the first para-rowing events and the first races for the bigger boat classes.
With a stiff headwind still blowing down the Bosbaan, races remained slow but tight as crews fought to stay in contention for the medal rounds later in the week.
It was another strong day for the home nation, with heat wins in the women’s and men’s fours and women’s quadruple sculls delighting the crowds in the grandstand.
The Netherlands added a win in the men’s double sculls quarterfinals, and their men’s quadruple sculls and lightweight men’s double sculls crews also qualified for the next round of their events.
Great Britain and the USA also had successful days on the water. The British PR3 mixed coxed four extended their unbeaten streak in international competitions with a heat win. However, Australia pushed them early, and the USA posted a slightly quicker time in their heat 1 victory.
Both nations also saw their men’s and women’s fours and quadruple sculls crews all safely through to the next round, with the British also adding a semifinal spot for their men’s double sculls and the USA lightweight men’s double sculls crew reaching the final.
History was made on the Bosbaan as Greece and Ireland both raced a women’s quadruple scull at a senior World Rowing Championships for the first time. The two crews reached the semifinals based on their heat times, with Ireland ranked seventh overall.
The men’s double sculls was the first event to hold quarterfinals, and after two rounds, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Serbia remain unbeaten. Meanwhile, China and France both miss out on the semifinals after strong finishes by Italy and under-23 world champions Portugal, respectively, rowed through them in the closing stages of the race.
After posting the fastest time overall in the heat, 2014 champions and world best time holders Martin and Valent Sinkovic (CRO) got themselves into a qualifying position in their quarterfinal. They held on to it, but they were 20th fastest overall and could have a fight on their hands to make another World Rowing Championships final in today's crucial semifinals.
Racing at the 2026 World Rowing Championships continues on Wednesday 26 August from 13:05 CEST, with the programme including heats of the PR3 mixed double sculls and the men’s and women’s single sculls, plus semifinals and minor finals of the events which had heats on Monday.
