"VAN" (Sports Desk - 18.08.2026) :: The draw ceremony for the African Beach Volleyball Championship for men and women will be held today in Alexandria, Egypt, as the city prepares to host the continental event from August 18 to 22 at the Abu Heif Beach courts in the Montaza district.
The championship will feature 46 teams representing 28 African countries, with 24 teams competing in the men’s event and 22 in the women’s competition.
The tournament carries major significance as it represents a key qualification opportunity for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The winners of the men’s and women’s competitions will each secure a direct qualification spot for the Olympic Games.
The championship is being held under the patronage of Engineer Ayman Attiya, Governor of Alexandria, while MP Aida Ismail, CAVB Board Member, chairs the tournament’s Higher Organizing Committee.
Bouchra Hajij, President of the African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB), will chair the technical meeting and draw ceremony after arriving in Alexandria today to oversee the final preparations for the championship.
The draw ceremony is scheduled to take place at Pioneers Club at 8:00 p.m., in the presence of members of the Organizing Committee and representatives of the participating men’s and women’s teams. The draw will determine the groups and opening-round matchups in accordance with the tournament regulations.
The championship brings together leading beach volleyball teams from across the continent, with all participating nations aiming to compete for the African title and secure the coveted Olympic qualification spot.
The participating countries are: Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Mozambique, Togo, Benin, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Burundi, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Niger, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Kenya, Angola, Botswana, Mauritius, Comoros, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Lesotho, Gambia, South Africa and Seychelles.
Alexandria is putting the final touches to its preparations to host this major continental beach volleyball event, which represents one of the most important stages in Africa’s road to Los Angeles 2028, as the participating teams look to reach the podium and secure their place at the Olympic Games.
