"VAN" (Sports Desk - 07.08.2025) :: A thunderstorm caused a delayed start, but racing eventually got underway as the first heats of the 2025 World Rowing Under 19 Championships took to the water in Trakai, Lithuania.
Spain’s Esther Fuerte Chacon won silver at the European Rowing U19 Championships earlier this season but is looking to go one better here in Trakai. The Spaniard comfortably clocked the fastest time across the five heats of the U19 women’s single sculls, with the reigning European Champion Varvara Lykomitrou of Greece clocking the second fastest time in the previous heat.
Meanwhile, in the U19 men’s single sculls, it was Germany’s Mads Schmied posting the fastest time across the four heats when he won the third heat in 7:10.16, but the recent European U19 silver medallist Barnabas Botond Kup of Hungary was just 0.04 seconds slower when he won the fourth and final heat.
The Greek boat had been tipped as one to watch in the U19 women’s double sculls and, despite a change to the initial entry, were very impressive, comfortably posting the fastest time across the three heats. Great Britain and Ireland won the second and third heats respectively.
Concluding the first day of racing was the heats of the U19 men’s double sculls and there were, once again, close winning times across the four heats. Germany’s Felix Krones and Julius Klein are one of the few line-ups not to have raced at the European Rowing U19 Championships earlier this season, but they are both medallists from last year’s World Rowing Under 19 Championships and that experience set them up well to post the fastest time in today’s heats.
With the heats for the single and double sculls complete, the remaining heats, and the preliminary race for the U19 women’s eight will take place tomorrow, Thursday 7 August.
