"VAN" (Sports Desk - 08.08.2025) :: Day two of the 2025 World Rowing Under 19 Championships saw the remainder of the crews complete their heats, with the boat sizes gradually increasing, culminating in the eights.
Racing started with the women’s pairs, which saw Uzbekistan clock the fastest time across the heats when Rayhon Sattorova and Aydana Smetullaeva posted 7:40.48 in the third and final heat with the reigning European U19 Champions from Romania having won the second heat in 7:43.49.
A very strong looking British duo posted easily the fastest time in the men’s pair – both Patrick Wild and Alp Karadogan have raced at two previous editions of the World Rowing Under 19 Championships, winning silver together in the men’s four last year.
Great Britain continued to impress throughout the racing day, securing heat wins in the women’s four, men’s four, women’s quad, and men’s eight – achieving the fastest qualifying times in many of those categories.
However, the men’s quadruple sculls saw Germany clock the fastest qualifying time, beating the reigning European U19 Champions of Poland in the process.
An exceptionally close preliminary race in the women’s eight saw Great Britain cross the line just 0.38 seconds ahead of the reigning U19 Champions from the USA and all crews finishing with overlap, suggesting we’re in for an exciting final on Sunday.
The men’s eight produced similarly close racing with Germany and Czechia trading places throughout the second heat. The German crew just got the edge in the final sprint having cranked the rating up to 40 strokes per minute, allowing them to beat the Czech crew by 0.65 seconds.
Day three of the competition will start with minor finals for the men’s single and double sculls before quarterfinals in the single sculls and semifinals in the double sculls. Racing will start at 10:30 EEST.
