"VAN" (Sports Desk - 20.08.2025) :: Two massive grand finals, one massive day: that’s what race fans can expect at Sydney Dragway this Saturday (August 23) as the National Drag Racing Championship (NDRC) brings its 2024/2025 Top Fuel and XPRO Nitro Funny Car championship chases to an epic close at the Nitro Nationals.
As the final race to crown the latest Top Fuel and XPRO Nitro Funny Car champion kicks off, the Aeroflow Allstars will also be on-track battling it out for $25,000 in cash and an iconic Rocket Trophy, guaranteeing no end of sportsman excitement.
At the same time, a wicked FMX show with the team from High Air – featuring X-Games Quarter Pipe gold medallist Corey Creed – will deliver gravity-defying stunts and heart-stopping action in a perfect complement to the show on the quarter-mile.
“Clearly, this is set to be one action-packed day of high-octane thrills, and with kids aged 13 and under getting in free, the Nitro Nationals are set to be an epic day out for all,” NDRC Co-Founder, Andy Lopez, said.
“We could not be more excited about this event. First off, you’ve got Top Fuel and XPRO Nitro Funny Car unleashing unrelenting power down the drag strip as they battle for event and title glory in their fire-breathing, 11,000hp, machines. And then the Aeroflow Allstars are also set to thrill, as will the incredible FMX show – there’s no doubt about it, this is going to be a show for the ages on August 23.
“Make sure you are here to be a part of it; I have a feeling we will be talking about this one for quite a while to come!”
Heading into the final stand for 2024/2025, Wayne Newby leads the Top Fuel chase for the prestigious Stan Sainty Trophy from Rapisarda Autosport International teammate and defending champion, Damien Harris, with Harris still having a chance to snatch the title away. They will be part of an epic seven-car field, joined by Phil Read, Phil Lamattina, Kyle Putland, Steve Read, and US drag racing legend, Larry Dixon – who took the win the last time the NDRC visited Sydney for the Nitro Champs back in May.
“To seal the championship with a win at our home track, Sydney Dragway, and hand our team owner, Santo Rapisarda, the Stan Sainty Trophy for winning the championship would be an awesome way to finish the season,” said Newby, who was the runner-up to his RAI American teammate Dixon at the Nitro Champs.
In XPRO Nitro Funny Car, Morice McMillin leads the way over his Aeroflow Racing teammate Josh Leahy and will be looking to lock the title down as early as possible in the intense racing program this Saturday.
The pair will be joined on-track by fellow XPRO Nitro Funny Car racers, American star Tommy Johnson Jnr, defending champion Justin Walshe, and up and coming racer Chris Stipanovich.
