As Brazil takes WPAC New Delhi by storm, coach Sabino endorses India’s Olympics, Paralympics aspirations

"VAN" (Sports Desk - 04.10.2025) :: Brazil has taken the IndianOil New Delhi 2025 World Para Athletics Championships at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium by storm to all intents and purposes. They are top of the medal tally and look all set to finish the championships, that ends Sunday, in the same position.

Alex Jose Sabino, one of the coaches with the Brazilian team in New Delhi, was not surprised though that his team had done so well in the ongoing championships. If his business-like demeanour was anything to go by, Brazil came here with nothing but the top spot on their mind. “We were top 3 in Kobe 2024. We are in a new cycle with new athletes and the most experienced ones and already working for Los Angeles [2028],” he said.

Sabino was of the opinion the New Delhi weather, which has been on the humid side in the last couple of weeks, did work in their favour, and was one of reasons why they now found themselves on top. When asked how the entire experience in India had been so far, he said: “Excellent. We were unable to go sightseeing but the hospitality and weather have been in our favour.”

Sabino was also all praise for the iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium which recently got the renowned Mondo track laid in there. Sabino said the Indians were spot on with their choice of the venue. “Perfect for an event of this size. Best choice in my opinion. It’s a stunning stadium.”

It is common knowledge that India intends to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and then the Olympics in 2036. In what should be considered a big boost to the country’s aspirations, Sabino endorsed India’s cause unequivocally. “Without a doubt [India is ready to host big global events]. It has what it takes for an Olympic and Paralympic Games,” he said.

Sabino reckoned Brazil could really boost their medal tally over the next two days. By Saturday noon, they had won 37 medals, including 12 gold. In Kobe, where they had finished second behind China, they had won 42 medals in all. “47 maybe [his prediction to win], we are looking for as much podium as possible. It’s always very competitive but we are well trained,” he concluded.
