Kiara Rodriguez claims fourth Long Jump gold medal; Nimisha finishes fourth

"VAN" (Sports Desk - 04.10.2025) :: Kiara Rodriguez just had to show up and produce one good effort in the IndianOil New Delhi 2025 World Para Athletics Championships here on Saturday to claim her fourth successive women’s Long Jump T47 gold medal and a Championships Record, leaving the others to battle it out for the silver medal.

Confident that gold was hers again, Kiara Rodriguez passed four jumps after registering 6.29m on her first attempt and a no mark on her second. She watched Denmark’s Bjoerk Noerremark leap 5.84m on her fifth try to move into silver medal position displacing India’s Nimisha Suresh Chakkungalparambil whose 5.74 in the third round fetched her the Asian Record.

It was the Dane’s turn to watch Hungary’s Petra Luteran produce a longer jump, just 2cm short of the 6.00m mark and move into second place. Nimisha had two opportunities to further her best but ended up with a foul and a 5.45m effort. The Indian, as her luck would have it, finished out of the podium as she was unable to find a better leap with her last two tries.

Nimisha joined Dayawanti (women’s Discus Throw F64) and seven men – Dilip Mahadu Gavit (400m T47), Haney (Discus Throw F37), Sagar Thayat (Discus Throw F44), Rahul (High Jump T63), Pushpendra Singh (Javelin Throw F44), Ajeet Singh Yadav (Javelin Throw F46) and Sachin Sarjerao Khliari (Shot Put F46) as Indians who missed the podium by one spot.

Kiara Rodriguez, who won the 100m T47 gold on Monday, is gunning for a treble here. She broke a 13-year-old 200m T47 World Record in the heats on Friday evening and passed the four jumps because she has to compete in the semifinals and final on Sunday. Nimisha was happy that she rewrote the Asian Record when competing at home.

There were two other Championships Records rewritten on Saturday, through Michael Brannigan (USA) in men’s 1500m T20 and Iran’s Ali Baziyarshoorijeh in the men’s Javelin Throw. It took the count of new meet marks to 87 along with a whopping 27 World Records being set in New Delhi 2025.

There were no changes at the top echelons of the medals table with Brazil remaining in the lead with 12 gold, 18 silver and 7 bronze medals. The two silver medals that China added through its women Shot Putters on Saturday meant that it edged ahead of Brazil on the total count with 40 medals (9 gold, 18 silver, 13 bronze). India (6-5-4) is in fourth place behind Poland (8-2-5).
