~ Under the Boxing Federation of India's selection policy, Asian Games medalists will be given priority for the 2027 World Championships, which serves as the first qualifying event for the LA 2028 Olympics.
"VAN" (Sports Desk - 17.09.2026) :: The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) announced a new selection policy on Wednesday. Under this policy, Indian boxers who win medals at the 2026 Asian Games will gain direct entry into the 2027 World Boxing Championships. This championship serves as the first qualifying event for the LA 2028 Olympics.
The policy outlines a four-stage qualification process based on the system established by 'World Boxing' and approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Led by Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain, India will field an 11-member boxing team—comprising five women and six men—at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya.
According to the qualification system, following the 2027 World Boxing Championships in Kazakhstan, there will be an Asian qualifier in China, followed by two additional world qualifying tournaments in Italy and Hungary in 2028.
Building upon the criteria issued on December 8, 2025, in line with the Olympic qualification system, the BFI released the selection criteria for the 2027-28 period.
In its circular, the BFI stated, "Medalists from the 2026 Asian Games will be selected as the primary entries in their respective weight categories. Gold medalists from the 10th Elite National Championships will be selected as reserve entries for those same weight categories."
For weight categories where Indian boxers fail to win a medal at the 2026 Asian Games, as well as for Olympic weight categories not included in the Asian Games program, gold medalists from the 10th Elite National Championships will be selected as the primary entries.
Boxers who reach the 'quota bout' round at the 2027 World Championships but fail to secure an Olympic quota will receive direct entry into the Asian qualifier. The remaining slots will be decided through ranking selection trials among elite national campers who have joined the national coaching camp via established procedures. A similar selection process will be adopted for the two World Qualifying Tournaments scheduled for 2028.
Initially, the national coaching camp will comprise medalists from the 10th Elite National Championships and the Asian Games, as well as wild-card entrants selected in accordance with the BFI selection committee's policy.
For non-Olympic weight categories, gold medalists from the 10th Elite National Championships will serve as the primary entrants for the 2027 World Championships, while silver medalists will act as reserve athletes.
