"VAN" (Sports Desk - 06.10.2026) :: Following an international search and bidding process, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has awarded the 2027 Paralympic Sport Medicine and Science Conference to Tokyo, Japan.
Formerly known as VISTA, the Paralympic Sport Medicine and Science Conference is the IPC’s leading international forum for sport scientists, medical professionals, coaches, classifiers, and other stakeholders in Para sport. It promotes collaboration and knowledge exchange across key areas including athlete health, performance, and classification, and supports the translation of research into practice. The Conference plays a central role in advancing inclusive sport systems and shaping the future of the Paralympic Movement.
The 2027 Paralympic Sport Medicine and Science Conference will take place between 5-8 September 2027.
Core components of the Paralympic Sports Medicine and Science Conference are keynote lectures by world-leading scholars and practitioners, invited symposia on emerging topics and innovations in Para sport, and peer-reviewed oral and poster presentations.
In Tokyo, the IPC will present the IPC Scientific Award which recognises individuals who have made significant contributions to the scientific study of sport for persons with disabilities.
Kristina Molloy, the IPC’s Interim Chief Executive Officer, said: “The IPC looks forward to welcoming the global Para sport community to Tokyo in 2027 to showcase the latest advances in science and medicine, strengthen international collaboration, and help shape the future of athlete health, participation, performance, and classification across the Paralympic Movement.”
Kazuyuki Mori, President of the Japanese Paralympic Committee, said: "We are honoured to host the 2027 Paralympic Sports Medicine and Science Conference in Tokyo, marking the sixth anniversary of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. We hope this conference will serve as an important opportunity to advance sports medicine and science and further strengthen the Paralympic Movement around the world, while building upon the lasting legacy of the Tokyo 2020 Games."
The IPC launched the bidding process for the Paralympic Sport Medicine and Science Conference in November 2025. After receiving several bids, the IPC carried out an in-depth review and evaluation, assessing each bid against a set of defined criteria.
The Paralympic Sport Medicine and Science Conference builds on more than 30 years of bringing together the world’s leading experts in Para sport science and medicine.
