Irene Presenqui (ARG) and Raghu Prasad (IND) named FIH Umpires of the Year

"VAN" (Sports Desk - 19.11.2025) :: The International Hockey Federation (FIH) proudly announces the recipients of the FIH Hockey Stars Awards – Umpire of the Year category, celebrating the individuals whose professionalism, dedication, and excellence have shaped the highest standards of international hockey officiating*.

Female Umpire of the Year: Irene Presenqui (Argentina)

Irene Presenqui has been honoured as the Female Umpire of the Year for her long-standing excellence and dedication to the game. Since earning her FIH Badge in 2008, Irene has demonstrated unwavering commitment to elite officiating, making her World Cup debut in 2010 at just 25 years old. Over a stellar 15-year career, she has officiated at four World Cups and four Olympic Games, consistently delivering world-class performances on hockey’s biggest stages.

In 2024, Irene made history as the first woman ever to umpire a men’s Olympic match, a groundbreaking moment that showcased her exceptional skill, composure, and professionalism. Her continued involvement in 2025—including officiating in the FIH Hockey Pro League, serving as the top umpire at the Pan American Cup, and stepping in from a reserve role to officiate at the FIH Junior World Cup—underscores her enduring influence in the sport.

Beyond the pitch, Irene is deeply committed to advancing the umpiring community. A trained sports psychologist, she has led workshops and presentations on mental health and performance, including sessions in Singapore, virtual presentations for Asia Hockey, and mentoring activities during the Pro League in London. Her blend of technical mastery and holistic mentorship makes her a role model for umpires worldwide.

Male Umpire of the Year: Raghu Prasad (India)

Raghu Prasad receives the Male Umpire of the Year Award in recognition of a remarkable 23-year international career defined by consistency, resilience, and excellence. Since his debut in 2003, Raghu has officiated across all continents and at every major tournament, including four FIH Hockey World Cups and three Olympic Games—a record few can match.

With 198 international umpiring caps and 33 video umpire appointments, Raghu is poised to achieve a historic milestone at the 2025 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia, where he will become the first-ever Asian umpire to reach 200 international caps. His extensive experience includes the FIH Hockey Pro League, Commonwealth Games, Junior World Cups, and major Asian tournaments such as three Asian Games, multiple Asia Cups, and Asian Champions Trophies.

Raghu’s enduring success reflects his exceptional fitness, sharp decision-making, and leadership on the field. His professionalism and humility have earned him immense respect within the global hockey community. As he nears the close of his illustrious umpiring journey, Raghu’s impact continues to inspire a new generation of officials dedicated to upholding the integrity and spirit of the game.
