Kazaki Аlisher Suleimenov Sensationally Defeats Five time World Champion Magnus Carlsen in Qatar Masters

"VAN" (Sports Desk - 13.10.2023) :: One of the strongest open tournaments in the world is currently taking place in Doha, Qatar, traditionally gathering a prestigious field of participants.

The Qatar Masters Open is among the most formidable open chess tournaments globally, exclusively open to players with a rating of 2300 and above. This year, 252 chess players from 44 countries are competing, with over 60 grandmasters among the participants. The tournament, which started on October 11, features chess titans like Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, and others. The total prize fund of the tournament amounts to $108,250.

The author of the first sensation is the Grandmaster Alisher Suleimenov from Pavlodar, Kazakhstan. Already in the second round, he was drawn to face the leader of the world rating list and a living legend, Magnus Carlsen. The Norwegian champion, surpassing our Grandmaster by more than 300 rating points, underestimated his opponent, making several superficial moves in the middle of the game, and received the deserved punishment.

To Alisher's credit, it should be noted that he did not back down from the great Magnus and confidently made material sacrifices when the position demanded it. On the 31st move, due to inevitable massive losses, Carlsen stopped the clocks. A convincing victory!

Other members of Kazakhstan national team are also participating in the tournament: Rinat Dzhumabayev, Bibisara Asaubayeva, Kazibek Nogerbek, and Alua Nurmanova.
