Mumbai Police imposed section 144; Long distance travel for non-essential purpose will not be permitted

"VAN" (Mumbai Bureau) :: In view of the high surge in Covid-19 cases in Mumbai, the city police today imposed section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, CrPC till 15th of July. It prohibits the presence or movement of more than 4-5 persons in public places or gatherings of any sort anywhere, including religious places subject to certain conditions. The order will come into effect from the midnight and will be in force till July 15.

As per the order, all movements of four or more than four persons has been prohibited in areas designated as "Containment Zones" by the municipal authorities, except for essential activities, supply of essential goods and medical emergencies.

The order further states that movement has been prohibited between 9.00 pm and 5.00 am, except for medical emergencies, emergency services, government agencies and their officials on duty, and establishments providing essential services.

However, movement of persons for non-essential activities such as shops, markets, barber shops, spas and outdoor physical activities, among others, shall be permitted within "nearby / neighbourhood areas" only.

Long distance travel for non-essential purpose will not be permitted.

Meanwhile, as many as 60 Maharashtra Police personnel, including three officers, have died of COVID-19 since the outbreak of the disease, an official said today. Out of the 60 victims, 38 were from the Mumbai Police itself.

As of now, there are 1,015 active cases in the state police force. The Maharashtra Police force comprises over two lakh personnel.
