Turkish security forces detain 72 asylum seekers near Greek border

"VAN" (International Desk - 29.03.2024) :: Turkish security forces detained a group of 72 asylum seekers in the city of Edirne, near the Greek border.

Anadolu Agency reported that among these asylum seekers were citizens of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, and Syria. They were attempting to travel towards Greece.

According to a report released by the Turkish state news agency on Wednesday, the eighth of March, these asylum seekers were transferred to the Edirne Provincial Directorate of Migration.

Over the past two and a half years since the Taliban took control in Afghanistan, a large number of Afghan migrants have traveled to Turkey in hopes of reaching Europe. Some have lost their lives or disappeared along this route.

Turkish security forces have launched extensive operations in recent months to identify, detain, and forcibly deport asylum seekers in various cities of the country.

Meanwhile, the dire humanitarian conditions faced by Afghan refugees in neighboring countries paint a bleak picture of neglect and disregard for their basic human rights. Many live in overcrowded camps with insufficient access to food, shelter, clean water, and medical care. Job opportunities are scarce, leaving families trapped in cycles of poverty and vulnerability.

Moreover, the returnees to Afghanistan encounter persecution under the Taliban regime, exacerbating their already precarious situation. Forced back into a country ravaged by conflict, they face threats to their safety and well-being. The international community must prioritize efforts to address the urgent needs of Afghan refugees, both within neighboring countries and upon return, ensuring their fundamental rights are upheld and their dignity preserved.
